It was a successful weekend on the course for Danny Klughart and Justin Wood.
The pair took home the Northern Team Championship at Cooke Municipal Golf Course with a total gross score of 128, finishing two shots clear of Ryan Wells and Kyle Schneider.
Klughart won the team championship last year playing alongside Mike Herperger. In an interview with the Daily Herald, Klughart says he was glad to be able to repeat.
“Any of the club tournaments here, it’s just an honor to win them. There’s some great players that come from out of town and there’s a lot of great players at the club. Just to compete with them and come out on top obviously feels good. Good way to kick off the season.”
Wood also participated in the tournament last year playing with a different partner. Klughart says it was an easy decision to reach out to Wood to play.
“Both our partners from last year decided to have kids, so they’re tied up doing family duty. Justin and I paired up. It’s great though, Justin and I have been great friends for a long time. It’s good to come and enjoy the weekend with him.”
After combining for a 60 on Saturday, Klughart and Wood rallied to combine with a 60 on Sunday to take the championship.
Klughart says the course was playing extremely well early in the season.
“It’s so good. Honestly, I haven’t seen it in this kind of condition this early in the season in a long, long time. The greens are fantastic and they’re quicker than normal. They’re rolling well, it’s a treat to play out there right now.”
In an interview after the round on Sunday, Wood says he felt confident playing throughout the weekend because of playing with Klughart, who won the Men’s Northern back in 2020.
“It’s a nice feeling having Danny there to fall back on. It gives you some confidence to just hit whatever kind of shot you want to hit because you’re pretty sure that he’s going to hit a good one. It’s pretty easy being his partner.”
Wood is a member at Riverside Country Club in Saskatoon and made the trip up to Prince Albert for the tournament. He says one of the reasons he likes playing in the Northern is the atmosphere around the course.
“The course is great, I love the layout and the conditions this year especially were fantastic. So yeah, I always love coming back here and just the environment. Just feels like a kind of a small town club, lots of familiar faces over the years. I really enjoy coming back. A lot of good friends here.”
