Winter activities for the young and not-so-young alike are getting ready to launch in the next couple of weeks. The ice will be in arenas in Wakaw, Cudworth, and Rosthern this month, and minor and recreational hockey will be in full gear for another season. Hockey is not the only activity on the menu for residents looking for recreational opportunities without driving to the city.
The Cudworth Skate Club is again bringing CanSkate to Wakaw as well as Cudworth. Enquiries can be made by calling the Skate Club at 306-229-6161. Registration for this program is found online at https://skatecudworthcanada.uplifterinc.com/
Rosthern’s eight-week Learn to Skate program launches on Monday, October 27th, and wraps up before Christmas on December 15th, while a six-week Hockey ABCs Program will run Fridays, November 7th to December 12th, for youngsters who are curious about hockey and are confident on skates. Registration for both programs can be done online at www.rosthern.com.
New this winter is the five-week Monday evening archery program being offered at Rosthern’s Community Multi-Purpose Centre (CMC) starting October 20th, and a drop-in Try Takraw program that runs Wednesdays at the centre. Takraw is a traditional Southeast Asian sport that “combines the best of volleyball and soccer.” It is open to all ages and skill levels, with a fee of $3/drop-in and the signing of a Liability Waiver.
Both Wakaw and Rosthern run community indoor walking programs, and those will be starting soon. Those interested in participating in the program in Wakaw can lace up their walking shoes and head over to the Wakaw Rec Centre on Friday, October 3rd. Except for days the Rec Centre is rented for another event, the Wakaw Community Walking Program operates on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays throughout the winter. A season pass is only $20, and other options include a monthly pass for $10 or a daily pass for $2. Payments can be made when arriving at the Rec Centre to participate.
Rosthern’s Walking and Wellness program launches for another year on Tuesday, October 21st. Running on Tuesdays and Thursdays until the end of March 2026 in the CMC at 2001, 3rd Street. This program involves 30 minutes of walking and 30 minutes of strength training. A season pass is available for $50, a monthly pass for $12, and drop-in rates are $3, payable at the Town Office or the CMC.
Already underway are bowling leagues in both Wakaw and Rosthern, as well as various dance clubs.
For those looking for an opportunity to do things for their community, the local service clubs, such as the Lions Clubs in Wakaw, Cudworth, and Rosthern, and the Knights of Columbus in Cudworth, are always ready to welcome new members.
