The Prince Albert Whiskey Jacks used their physical style of play to their advantage Wednesday night at Max Clunie Field.
In what had been a close affair after 40 minutes, the Whiskey Jacks pulled away in the second half as they picked up their first victory of the 2019 campaign over the Saskatoon Kradgers by a score of 45-17.
“We stuck to our game plan tonight,” Whiskey Jacks coach Dominic Elsbury said. “We knew that Saskatoon was going to come at us with speed as they have a lot of skillful players.
“To try and negate that, we needed to keep things tight on defence and play a power based game. We weren’t afraid to go three yards and a cloud of dust out there.”
The physical style of play that the Whiskey Jacks used also allowed them to wear down the Kradgers in the second half.
It was the exact opposite of how things went for them last week, as they ended up on the losing end in a high-scoring 72-33 affair against the Saskatoon Goats.
“In our past games we’ve had some mental lapses and we’ve played in patches,” Elsbury said. “We’d have some strong performances, but then we’d let teams off the hook for three or four minutes and they took advantage of our mistakes.
“I’m really happy that we had a solid 40 minutes in the second half and we were able to keep the pressure on them. We had a set piece advantage tonight and we made sure to take advantage of it in the scrums.”
The Whiskey Jacks will look to improve upon their 1-3 record next Saturday afternoon against the Regina Highlanders at Max Clunie Field.
The start time for that game has yet to be finalized.
