Timberland hosts Saskatchewan Archery Association provincials

Nathan Reiter/Daily Herald Skylar Jones, age 12, poses for a photo with his bow at the Alfred Jenkins Field House in Prince Albert on Sunday afternoon.

It was a weekend full of archery at the Alfred Jenkins Field House.

Archers from Saskatchewan made their way to Prince Albert to compete in the Saskatchewan Archery Association (SAA) Indoor Junior Olympic Program (JOP) and Indoor Provincials.

One of the archers in attendance was 12-year-old Skylar Jones. He has been shooting for the last seven years and was one of several competitors representing the Timberland Bowbenders out of Prince Albert.

When asked why he first picked up a bow, Jones had a pretty unique reason for it.

“I guess just the thought of being able to shoot something without getting in trouble.” Jones said with a smile. “My second cousin did it and then after that I just started, my whole family just started doing it.”

Jones competed in the JOP division, which has archers from age 6 all the way through age 21. There were a total of 42 targets set up in the Alfred Jenkins Field House with multiple archers shooting to each one.

Jones says he wasn’t too nervous competing on a big stage because it’s something he has done before.

“Every time it starts to get a little less intimidating because this would be my fifth year shooting these and I’ve shot a lot of other smaller competitions.”

In total, more than 700 archers from across Saskatchewan competed over the two day event. Tiffany Jones, one of the organizers for the event says the use of the Alfred Jenkins makes the event possible.

“It’s awesome. We like it, it’s kind of like being on an actual field and shooting and we just love it that we’re able to use this facility year after year and show what we can do.”
