Tidbits from the north

This is a different tidbits.

Many things have been cancelled because of the evacuation regarding wildfires around northern Saskatchewan.

Typically, people might be out enjoying concerts, language festivals, the Napatak Ramble, culture camps, or year-end trips. Instead, northerns are scattered across the province in cities, small towns, or on reserves.

One event happening in Regina as the Northern Advocate goes to press – the Honourable Russ Mirasty, a Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) member and former Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan, will be presented with an Honorary Doctor of Laws honouris cause (LLD) at the Spring Convocation of the University of Regina on Wednesday June 11.

The Northern Advocate will have more in the July edition.

But I can tell you some of the things that are happening.

Firefighters are coming from near and far to help get the fires under control in so many of our communities everywhere from Creighton to Weyakwin.

SaskPower and SaskTel are in the community trying to restore needed infrastructure.

Kevin Jackson has set up his massage table in the fire hall in Lamont to support firefighters with treatments.

Marker 47 and Cravings have given all their food to sustain firefighters and those working too keep the firefighters and other emergency personnel going.

One person who deserves so much love and support is chief Tammy Cook-Searson who has been on the ground since the beginning organizing, encouraging, and writing reports for the emergency people to keep people informed of what’s happening.

It is so important for those of us away from our homes to know what’s happening at home. Facebook has become the medium for many of us to keep in touch with home.

We need to be wary in some ways, but also appreciative of all that’s being done to keep our homes our communities as secure as possible in this traumatic time.
