The Bush Pies ‘chomping at the bit’ for Prince Albert return

Prince Albert musical group The Bush Pies don’t get on stage as much as they used to, but the excitement of performing hasn’t gone away.

The four-person band consisting of Joel Rohs, Zachary Kerr, John Germs, and Kirk Pilon have played plenty of private shows over the past year or two. But outside of a performance at Country at the Creek and a few other venues, public shows have been few and far between.

That will change on Saturday when the group takes the stage at the Rock Trout Events Centre in Prince Albert.

“We’ve definitely slowed down,” Pilon said with a laugh. “Everybody’s had kids. Everybody’s got family. It’s tougher to get together. Joel is playing with Jake Vaadeland and the Sturgeon River Boys and they’re touring everywhere, so it’s tough.”

Founded in 2012, The Bush Pies line-up has changed over the years. Pilon said it’s been a bit of a revolving door, but they’re happy to be back on stage for a public show.

“We’re chomping at the bit,” he said. “We’re excited. It’s a different vibe. When you’re playing in front of all your friends, I don’t want to say it’s a party but it’s definitely a celebration you get to enjoy together. It’s something you can share with your family and friends.”

While Pilon and the group are happy to be back on stage, it’s too soon to say how big of a return this will be. Pilon said they’re confirmed to play Country at the Creek again this summer, and are hoping to add a few other festivals to their schedule. However, they haven’t finalized anything.

The group has also added a few new songs to their repertoire for this weekend’s show.

“It’s one thing to play the same songs over and over again,” Pilon said. “We’ve definitely got some new ones added to the set list and we’re definitely excited to play them for everyone.”

The Bush Pies will perform at the Rock Trout Events Centre on Saturday, March 22. Doors open at 8 p.m. with the show starting at 9 p.m. Tickets are available in advance or at the door.
