Sunday WHL recap

In the lone game on the schedule, the Everett Silvertips picked up their first win of the season Sunday as they defeated the Portland Winterhawks by a score of 3-1.

Connor Dewar led the way for the defending Western Conference champions with a goal and an assist, while Jackson Berezowski and Jake Christiansen also scored.

Goaltender Dustin Wolf made 25 stops in the triumph.

Rookie Jaydon Dureau had the lone goal for the Winterhawks, who received a 26-save performance from Shane Farkas.

Roster Moves

The Red Deer Rebels are now down to three overage players after they parted ways with defenceman Colin Paradis this weekend.

Paradis, a 20-year-old from Sherwood Park, Alta., was acquired from the Moose Jaw Warriors in January for blueliner Brandon Schuldhaus and had 10 points in 29 games for the Rebels.

With his release, forwards Jeff de Wit, Brandon Hagel and Reese Johnson are the remaining overagers in the Rebels lineup.

Meanwhile, the Brandon Wheat Kings signed goaltender Connor Ungar to a standard player agreement Saturday.

A listed prospect of the Wheat Kings, the 16-year-old from Calgary had an 18-0-0 record with a 1.76 goals against average and a .918 save percentage for the Northern Alberta Xtreme Elite 15’s program last season.

He is expected to stay in the Canadian Sport School Hockey League this year with the Xtreme Midget Prep program.

NHL Contracts

Two players from the Western Hockey League signed entry level contracts with National Hockey League clubs this weekend.

On Saturday, Spokane Chiefs forward Jake McGrew inked a deal with the San Jose Sharks, while Red Deer Rebels defenceman Alexander Alexeyev finalized his contract with the Washington Capitals a day later.

McGrew, a 19-year-old from Orange, California, had 38 points in 65 games for the Chiefs last season after missing the entire 2016-17 campaign due to an knee injury.

He was originally selected by the Sharks in the sixth round of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.

Alexeyev, who was picked by the reigning Stanley Cup champions with the 31st overall pick in June, had 37 points in 45 regular season games last year.

The 18-year-old Russian scored twice for the Rebels this weekend in losses to the Edmonton Oil Kings.
