NIPAWIN — The Nipawin Fire Department (NFD) responded to a barn fire in the RM of Nipawin late Monday morning, where firefighters faced heavy smoke and a stubborn fire that spread into concealed spaces according to the NFD.

According to the fire department, crews were dispatched at approximately 11:22 a.m. on Jan. 19. When firefighters arrived, the landowners had already managed to evacuate all cows and newborn calves from the barn despite heavy smoke conditions.

The landowners were also able to knock down most of the visible flames before crews arrived; however, the fire had extended into the walls of the structure.

Firefighters cut open interior walls to access smouldering fire in void spaces, but the NFD said the blaze proved difficult to fully extinguish despite its relatively small size.

Crews eventually moved operations to the exterior of the building, using chainsaws to create additional access points. Hose lines were then used to suppress remaining hot spots, followed by saturating the attic area to prevent rekindling according to the NFD.

Emergency medical services were called to the scene, and one resident was transported to hospital as a precaution.

The department said the incident marked its 21st call of 2026 and the second emergency response in less than 24 hours.

No further injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire has not been released.
