The annual Stanley Mission Poker Rally began with the largest number of hands in their history on January 31.

The rally had 4,090 Hands, with the first winner taking home $30,000, Jasmine Charles, recreation director for the community, said in and interview with the Northern Advocate.

The Rally consisted of five check points where participants picked up their cards.

The first and last check points are at the Band hall, where tables were also set up for people to participate.

The second check point was on Iskwatikan Lake, the third near Nistowiak Falls and the fourth was “called Malachi,” she said.

The weather was some of the best, warm for what’s expected on the last week of January.

“The last location would be the Band hall, so that’s where you get your last card and you should have five cards in your deck,” Charles said.

Once a rider arrives at the last station, they will get their “Hand” checked to see if it is “good enough to place,” she said.

Snowmobilers travel from long distances to participate in the Rally, she said. “There’s lots of people from different places, more from northern Saskatchewan, some southern, they come from all over.”
