For St. John Vianney Catholic Parish in La Ronge, the first weekend of September 2025 was an occasion for a triple celebration: the Holy Year, Jubilee 2025; the centenary of the canonization of its patron saint, St. John Vianney; and the 75th anniversary of the parish.

The celebration began with prayer on Friday, September 5 and ended with a program of joyful singing on Sunday, September 7, under the direction of pastor Fr. Petronilo Ligtas. In between, there were several opportunities for worship and socializing for the culturally diverse parish as it welcomed back former parishioners.

A historical slide show and displays of photos and memorabilia were informative for newcomers and brought back memories for others.

In its 75-year history, the parish has had three places of worship. The first building was a converted pool hall on La Ronge Avenue. Then a small church was built on Cuthand Street in 1959, which was replaced by the larger, current one in 1991.

Fr. Joseph Subhash of Thompson, Manitoba represented the Archdiocese of Keewatin-Le Pas. In his Sunday homily, he reflected, “The number 75 is not just about years – it is about faith. It represents generations of families who have prayed here, countless baptisms and weddings, moments of forgiveness in confession, tears shed in sorrow, and hearts lifted in praise. Truly, this church has been a home for God’s people.”

The congregation took time to honour the founders and builders of the parish, and a memorial table also remembered those who have since entered eternity. The participation of children and youth in special activities was a sign of hope for the future.

In her closing remarks, parish council president Denise Elliot said, “My heart is full,” as she invited those present to take a moment to remember all their blessings.
