Runway Resonance: Soundscapes for Fashion Shows featured Patrick Moon Bird and Jason Baerg on Saturday at Studio Q.
The workshop took inspiration from different local inputs in Prince Albert with Bird, and Regina with Baerg over a zoom call, where a new soundscape was created for the upcoming fashion show by Jason Baerg, Geanna Dunbar, David Le, and Lisa Wickland.
“I was very green to it all, I got into it because Alex (Powalinsky) and Lisa (Halsall) from Studio Q suggested me to Jason Baerg, and I felt like at first I didn’t know what my role was, but then over a couple of Zoom calls, I started getting more of an understand and then I realized that I’m capable to do these kind of things,” said producer and musician Patrick Moon Bird, who facilitated the workshop alongside Baerg.
Bird said that this was his first experience creating a soundscape for a runway in a fashion show, and was unsure about it all at the start. Beside the new challenge, Bird said that the experience helped him gain recognition and feeds into his bigger goal; showing youth that it is possible to make a livelihood in music.
“It’s my breath, it’s everything,” Bird said. “I run solely and purely on my music, and throughout my life, music was always there for me. I found music to be such an anchor in my life, not only that but wings as well. It lets me soar to places I’ve never been before.”
Bird explained that he is nominated for the Saskatchewan Indigenous Music Awards, and although he is not able to attend, he is very excited.
The workshop took tracks from Free Music Archives, and stitched those tracks together on BandLab. The group on the other side of the Zoom call in Regina with Baerg also created a track. Bird then stitched the two tracks together to create the final sound loop that will play for the fashion show.
Bird talked about how youth sometimes look to music as an escape, but that they can also have a chance in the industry, even if they don’t think so.
“It’s very possible, as long as you keep discipline in your life, you can reach your goals,” Bird said. “You can reach these peaks in life, and it’s so valuable for people to know that. I see so many youth that just throw away their life and they don’t do anything for their life.”
Bird said it was a really great experience learning how to produce a fashion runway soundscape for the first time, and he would do it again if the opportunity arises.
