During a routine traffic stop last week on Trans-Canada Highway, the Saskatchewan RCMP’s Roving Traffic Unit pulled over a large cargo van that turned out to be carrying more than 1,500 pounds of illegal cannabis.

The unit was making “proactive” patrols around 11 a.m. on Jan. 9 when it stopped the van, said the RCMP in a news release issued Monday.

“During a subsequent investigation,” officers discovered and seized approximately 1,551 pounds of cannabis along with a “sum of cash,” the release continued.

The driver, who was arrested at the scene, told police he was travelling from B.C. to Quebec.

The man, from Port Moody, B.C., has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 (a Criminal Code violation) and possession for the purpose of distributing (under the Cannabis Act).

He is scheduled to appear in Swift Current provincial court on April 16.

Saskatchewan Highway Patrol officers and the Provincial Protective Services Branch assisted with the investigation, adds the release.
