Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division (SRPSD) has announced a new childcare space opening at John Diefenbaker Public School in partnership with the Prince Albert Childcare Cooperative.

“We are excited to be able to have this new facility in this school from the partnership that we already have with the Prince Albert Childcare Cooperative,” Saskatchewan Rivers Supt. Garette Tebay said.

This new facility will open in early March. Tebay said they were looking for a school that had space to support a child care partnership. Diefenbaker School just underwent a kitchen renovation and Tebay said that made it an ideal candidate for hosting shared space.

She added that the new space shows how both organizations are supporting families by providing accessible, high-quality childcare services.

“The big benefit is that it’s a kind of a one stop shop for our families. They’re able to drop off their younger children to childcare at the same space where they are dropping off the older children for school that day,” Tebay said.

The new childcare space will provide 30 spots for children aged 18 months to 6 years old, offering a nurturing environment where children can grow, learn, and play.

Tebay said this is part of a broader effort to support Prince Albert families by integrating childcare services into schools. She said they’re hoping to expand into other schools so they can provide more services for parents.

“At SRPSD, we believe in fostering excellence for every learner, and this new childcare space aligns with our mission to create supportive environments for families to thrive,” Tebay said in the release made available to the press.

The facility is designed to meet all provincial standards in childcare, featuring natural light, imaginative play spaces, and a state of the art kitchen.

Prince Albert Childcare Cooperative Executive Director Jodene Demorest said partnering with Saskatchewan Rivers allows them to serve even more families in Prince Albert.

She said the initiative strengthens connections between families, schools, and community partners while providing children with seamless transitions into their educational journeys from one stage to the next.

“We look forward to welcoming children and their families to this beautiful new space and supporting their development during these crucial early years,” Demorest said in a press release.

The Prince Albert Childcare Cooperative also operates spaces at St. John School, St. Michael School, and King George School. The Cooperative is a non-profit governed by a board of directors who are elected by the membership.
