Local music group helps kick off literacy campaign
Students at Riverside Public School had a rocking afternoon recently as they kicked off an annual campaign designed to increase oral language and reading fluency.
For the second year in a row, students at the Prince Albert school will take part in Rock Star Reading. The program is designed to not only improve language skills, but also install a love for the printed word.
“There is kind of a, I feel, a loss of love for reading, because there is so much electronic visual stuff that maybe some of the reading portion is lost a little bit,” said Jodi Honch, the Riverside School dream catcher coach who oversees the program. “I think this is a way to get kids pumped about reading.”
Local musical group Constant Reminder helped kick off this year’s campaign with a special performance for students.
Honch said they wanted to bring in a group that would entertain students while emphasizing the importance of learning, so Constant Reminder was a good fit.
