The Saskatchewan RCMP have identified the deceased individual found inside a stolen truck that was set on fire at a business on 41st Street East as 39-year-old Stacey Badger from Mistawasis First Nation.
The vehicle was originally found stuck in a field roughly 40 km east of Prince Albert, just off Hwy 302, on Feb. 4 at around 7:15 a.m. RCMP say the truck was originally reported stolen on Jan. 29.
The Prince Albert RCMP ordered the vehicle towed to a business on 41st Street East in Prince Albert the same day it was found. On Feb. 7, emergency services were called to a fire at that same business.
The RCMP say multiple vehicles at the business were on fire, including the truck. The Prince Albert Fire Department extinguished the fire and determined it was suspicious in nature.
On Feb. 9, the Prince Albert RCMP received a report from Prince Albert Police Service’s Forensic Identification Section saying they had found a deceased individual inside the stolen vehicle while investigating the fire.
The death was considered suspicious in nature. Based on the evidence gathered to date and the connection to the Prince Albert RCMP investigation into the stolen vehicle, the Saskatchewan RCMP’s Homicide Investigation Unit took over the investigation.
They were able to identify the individual as 39-year-old Stacey Badger from Mistawasis Nêhiyawak (Mistawasis First Nation). Her family has been notified and victim services made available to them.
Saskatchewan RCMP’s Homicide Investigation Unit continue to actively investigate this incident. Investigators have checked surrounding neighbourhoods for witnesses and video captured on security cameras and doorbell cameras. The Homicide Investigation Unit continues to collect and analyze evidence and are now asking the public for their assistance.
If anyone has information about this incident, or if anyone witnessed any suspicious activity in the area of 41st Street East in Prince Albert between the evening of Feb. 6 and the morning of Feb. 7, please report it to police immediately.
