A house fire on Beardy’s & Okemasis’ Cree Nation resulted in one death, according to a statement by band councillor Kevin Seesequasis.
He said the RCMP are treating the fire as suspicious.
Seesequasis said the Major Crimes Unit and the Forensic Identification Section were expected to arrive on Sunday evening, with the Fire Investigation Team looking into the incident on Monday.
“I wish to extend my condolences to the affected family and my sincere appreciation to our First Crew – appropriate mental health supports are being provided,” he said.
Seesequasis emphasized that the Willow Cree Health Services Emergency Crisis Line is available for anyone affected.
He said he will release additional information when it comes and is appropriate to do so.
The First Nation is located west of Duck Lake.
