Raiders edge Warriors in road pre-season affair

Lucas Punkari/Daily Herald Prince Albert Raiders teammates Cole Nagy, left, and Jeremy Masella chase after Moose Jaw Warriors forward Tate Popple during a WHL pre-season game at the Art Hauser Centre Wednesday night.

The Prince Albert Raiders improved their record in exhibition play to 2-1 Saturday night as they topped the Moose Jaw Warriors in a 3-2 affair at Mosaic Place.

Rookie forwards Evan Herman and Ilya Usau had a goal and an assist each in the triumph, while Justin Nachbaur had a pair of helpers.

Ozzy Wiesblatt scored for the third time in as many games for the Raiders, who also received a 24-save showing from Boston Bilous.

Drae Gardiner and Carson Denomie both found the back of the net and Jackson Berry turned aside 29 shots for the 1-4 Warriors.

The Raiders will wrap up their pre-season slate next weekend with a home-and-home series with the Regina Pats.

The two sides will square off at the Brandt Centre Friday before a 7 p.m. meeting at the Art Hauser Centre the following night.

Post-Game Notes

In addition to sitting in a tie with Ozzy Wiesblatt for the most goals by a Raiders player in the pre-season, Evan Herman’s three goals are the most by a rookie since Spencer Moe found the net that many times in 2016.

Norway’s Jonas Kuntsen scored six goals in the 2011 pre-season, but only scored six times during his rookie campaign.

The Raiders dressed the same lineup for the third straight pre-season contest, as blueliners Nolan Allan, Zack Hayes, Brayden Pachal and Max Martin were scratched, along with forwards Jakob Brook, Cohner Saleski, Aliaksei Protas and Cole Fonstad.

Defencemen Cory King, Daemon Hun and Matthew Benson did not play for the Warriors, in addition to Ryder Korczak, Cameron Sterling, Kjell Kjemhus and Brayden Tracey.
