An inquest into the death of a 33-year-old inmate at Pine Grove Provincial Correctional Centre has been re-scheduled for January after being put on hold in September.
Lynette Kakakaway was found unresponsive in her cell on June 24, 2022. Staff began life-saving care and called EMS to the scene. EMS arrived and took over care but could not resuscitate her. They pronounced Kakakaway deceased at the scene.
An inquest was originally scheduled for Sept. 15-19 in Prince Albert. However, the coroner cancelled at the request of Kakakaway’s family.
On Friday, the Saskatchewan Coroners Service announced the inquest would run from Jan. 19-23 at the Coronet Hotel in Prince Albert. The first day of the inquest is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
The Saskatchewan Coroners Service is responsible for the investigation of all sudden, unexpected deaths. The purpose of an inquest is to establish who died, when and where that person died and the medical cause and manner of death. The coroner’s jury may make recommendations to prevent similar deaths.
