The local chapter of the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW), is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the national organization with an award that only comes once a century.
The Prince Albert CFUW, a group of women dedicated to improving the lives of all Canadian women, has selected one woman for a special centennial scholarship. The P.A. chapter has been around for 88 years.
“We are offering a centennial scholarship in the centennial year of the CFUW Prince Albert Club valued at $1000. It is given to a worthy female recipient, which happens to be Jerri Frantik”, says Lorraine Brokop, member of the CFUW Prince Albert chapter committee.
Frantik, while shocked that she was chosen, is extremely appreciative of the CFUW and is looking to give back to the organization by volunteering with their next book sale.
“I am very honoured and grateful to be receiving this scholarship, I was very humbled and so happy when I got the phone call and they said I have been selected”.
The money for CFUW’s annual scholarships is collected through two book sales organized each year, one in the spring and one in the fall.
Dalelene Yelland, CFUW Prince Albert Club president, says “The money that is raised is contributed by the community and the total is given to the schools and subsequently to female students who are going on to post-secondary education, we believe that education empowers women.”
The CFUW, a non-profit organization that has 100 clubs across Canada in every province, has a vision of a world where poverty is reduced, discrimination eliminated, and there are equal opportunities for leadership, employment, income, education, and careers.
They participate in local, regional, national, and international conferences and seminars, as well as work to prevent violence against women, child poverty initiatives, advocate for First Nations concerns, and work with literacy councils.
