The man facing multiple charges in connection with a fatal collision last fall will have a preliminary hearing in December.
Donovan Sibanda did not appear in person at Provincial Court in Prince Albert on Wednesday. His lawyer appeared on his behalf while Judge Lori O’Connor set his preliminary hearing for Dec. 2. The charges stem from a Sept. 17, 2025 collision that led to the death of 28-year-old Shawna Ratt.
Ratt was travelling with two other people when their SUV was struck on the passenger side at the Marquis Road and Second Avenue West intersection. Parkland Ambulance paramedics arrived on scene and transferred Ratt to hospital, where she later passed away from her injuries, according to a Prince Albert Police Service press release.
The other two people in the vehicle were treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries and were released from hospital.
Investigators arrested Sibanda on Oct. 20, according to the press release, and charged him two counts of impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, one count of operating a motor vehicle while impaired, and one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death, among other charges.
Ratt leaves behind a son who was four years old at the time of her death. Her passing led friends and family to create a Justice for Shawna Ratt Facebook group, which has 154 members as of Friday.
