The Prince Albert Police Service say they will not file charges against a 27-year-old woman who was a passenger in a vehicle that ended up in the North Saskatchewan River in the early morning hours of June 11.
Officers did not find the woman after the car entered the river, resulting in an extensive search with help from the Prince Albert Fire Department, Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency, Saskatchewan Marshalls Service, and RCMP dive team. She was later found “away from the river and uninjured.”
The Prince Albert Police Service has charged the 22-year-old woman accused of driving the vehicle when it entered the river. Destiny Hansen faces two charges, including failing to stop for police. She made her first court appearance on June 12.
Investigators are still trying to determine whether Hansen was impaired at the time of the incident.
The police chase began chasing the vehicle after it was reported stolen at 2:15 a.m. on June 11. A woman reported being robbed of her vehicle at gunpoint in the 2700 block of Second Avenue East.
Officers found two women at the scene who did not report any injures. The driver of the stolen vehicle fled before the police arrived.
Officers found the vehicle minutes later in the Marquis Road and Fourth Avenue East area. Police say the driver of the stolen vehicle did not stop and evaded police while traveling east on Marquis Road and north on 15th Avenue East.
The driver continued north towards River Street before entering the river at 2:20 a.m. Officers who arrived on the scene reported seeing two occupants from the vehicle in the river.
The Prince Albert Fire Department and an RCMP drone helped find a 22-year-old woman on the river bank east of where the vehicle entered into the water. She was transported to hospital and treated for minor injuries.
In a press release on June 11, the PAPS identified her as the driver of the stolen vehicle.
