A police chase that sped through Prince Albert involving a FedEx van ended in a ditch along Hwy. 11 between Hague and Neuanlage Tuesday.
According to the Prince Albert police, at about 10:45 a.m., a man stole a FedEx van parked in the 1400 Block of Central Avenue. A delivery driver was unloading the vehicle when a man took control of the van and sped off.
Police followed the van until it reached the Hazeldell area. Officers attempted a traffic stop on the stolen van, which ignored the lights and sirens and made contact with a police vehicle before heading back south on Second Avenue.
According to witness reports, the van sped south down Second Ave. West in Prince Albert with as many as six police cars in pursuit. One witness said the truck narrowly avoided causing a collision at the corner of Second Ave. and Marquis Street as it went through a red light.
The van travelled at high, reckless speeds and the Prince Albert Police Service and RCMP worked together to stop the vehicle.
A second witness saw the police take out the mail van along Highway 11. She said the vehicle appeared to be driving at high speed, possibly as fast as 150 km/h, on flat tires and rims.
Photos and video from the scene show six police vehicles from both the Prince Albert Police Service and the RCMP surrounding the van, which is tipped up on its side with one of the rear doors open.
The suspect is in custody. Charges are pending.
