Piwapan to host first annual Youth Conference VALERIE G. BARNES CONNELL JORDAN NORTHERN ADVOCATE Over the years, Piwapan Wellness Centre has held an annual gala celebrating women where people have the opportunity to nominate women from the area for a variety of awards. Much more recently they added a men’s gala, which men can be celebrated for their gifts and contribution to the community. Piwapan recently announced they will host a half-day Youth Conference at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre (JRMCC) on Thursday, March 13 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. There will be a break and supper and a Gala Celebration will be held later. People can also go online to nominate youth from the communities for awards, which will be presented at the evening Gala by going on Piwapan’s Facebook page. “At the last Gala that we had, I did say we would like to recognize the youth…. Since we have it for the men and women, having something for the youth, is what prompted it,” Karen Sanderson, Piwapan executive direction, said, in and interview with the Northern Advocate. The event will open with a lunch and “then we have some speakers coming … the theme is Mental Health, “she said. “With all that has been going on lately, we thought we would focus on Mental Health, because there’s been a lot of losses, a lot of grief in the community and we just want to be able to give youth some strategies and some information , knowing what the resources are in the community that can help them, and, focusing on more positive ways of dealing with grief and loss.” The hope for the event is “for our youth to attend, make connections, and have the resources available to them and then to also recognize their work in different areas, not just academics, but in volunteering and … just highlighting them, just reinforcing that there are people out there that care and we’re here to help them, so, they don’t feel so lost,” Sanderson said. Nominations have started to come in for the Gala, she added. There is no registration requirement for the event. Youth “can just come,” Sanderson said. There will be two speakers and “program people around.” People can nominated youth up to Monday, March 10. There is a process online to nominate youth for awards by going to youthworker2@piwapan.com
