The RCMP have arrested two suspects from Big Island Lake Cree Nation accused of attempting to ram a police car in a stolen vehicle.
Jasmine Wahpistikwan, 28, and Damon Kiseyinewakup, 27, made their first appearance in court in Meadow Lake on Feb. 9. Both suspects face multiple charges including flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, assault of a police officer with a weapon, resisting arrest, and possession of property over $5,000 obtained by crime.
The charges stem from an investigation that began at around 11:45 a.m. on Feb. 7 when the Pierceland RCMP received reports of a vehicle theft with a firearm. Police say the theft occurred on Feb. 6 on Big Island Cree Nation.
Officers immediately investigated the report and patrolled the area. At around 12:25 p.m., Pierceland RCMP located the stolen vehicle with two occupants in front of a residence on West Road on Big Island Lake Cree Nation.
Police say the driver of the stolen vehicle attempted to ram the police vehicle before fleeing at high speed. Officers followed the stolen vehicle through local streets and onto a wooded trail on Big Island Lake Cree Nation.
The stolen vehicle eventually became stuck in the snow. Pierceland RCMP officers approached the vehicle and arrested the two occupants.
