One year after coming up one stroke short, Bred Phelps has won the Sr. Men’s Northern at Cooke Municipal Golf Course.
In 2024, Phelps finished just behind champion Trent Kachur for the Sr. Men’s title. On Thursday, the Saskatoon product left little room for doubt, shooting a two-day total of 140 (69-71) to finish six strokes ahead of the nearest competition to win the Bob Hemsworth Trophy.
“It was good,” Phelps said. “I’ve always liked coming to PA to play. I’ve won the northern a couple of times, but being a senior now and coming over and winning the Sr. Northern was also something special.
“Angus (Hemsworth) and his brother (Rob), they’re friends of mine, so winning their trophy for their dad is kind of special.”
There was a logjam for second, with Darren Jenkins, Colin Coben, and Martin Ring all shooting a two-day total of 146. Phelps said the competition at the Sr. Men’s Northern is always strong.
“Marty Ring and Trent Kachur and Bruce Ede and Derek Jenkins, they’re all local guys who play here all the time,” Phelps said. “They’re stiff and tough to play, so you have to have your game on when you’re up here playing. You’ve got to make sure you’re sharp and ready to go.”
The conditions were less than ideal on Thursday, as strong winds blew throughout the morning and afternoon. Phelps said he tried to play confident and not worry too much about what the wind was doing.
“If you hit the ball solid, the wind usually doesn’t affect it that much, and it was nice to have Danny Klughart on the bag today,” Phelps said. “He’s got a little knowledge about this place. I do too, but he’s got more than me and he’s a good friend of mine, so having him around just to walk around and play.
“I played with my good friend Colin Cobin, (and that) made it easier. The conditions were tough, but if you just think your way through, and if you’re just hitting the ball solid, which I did for most of the part today, the wind doesn’t affect it as much as you think.”
