The Melfort Mustangs snapped a lengthy losing streak and the Nipawin Hawks and La Ronge Ice Wolves had splits of wins and losses in the SJHL’s UPL Division last week.
As of Jan. 19, the Hawks are in second place with a record of 23-12-1-0 with 47 points, six points behind the first place Flin Flon Bombers. The Mustangs are in third place with a record of 14-18-1-2 with 31 points and the Ice Wolves are in fourth place with a record of 7-23-3-1 with 18 points.
Nipawin finished their week with a 7-5 loss to the Yorkton Terriers in Nipawin on Friday, Jan. 16.
The Hawks led 4-1 after the first period and trailed 6-4 after the second period.
Braeden Jockims, Finley Radloff, Mason Lowther, Jack Janzen and Eric Hoiness scored for the Hawks.
William Leonard had a hat trick for the Terriers; other Yorkton goals came from Aidan Vallance, Austin Horbachewsky and Ryder McDonald.
Gage Roberts made 15 saves in two periods of action for Nipawin before being replaced by Colten Scott who made 13 saves.
Alexandro Montoya made 15 saves for the Terriers in the first period before being replaced by Callum Creig who made 23 saves.
The Hawks opened their week with a 4-3 win over the Kindersley Klippers in Nipawin on Wednesday, Jan. 14.
Nipawin led 2-1 after the first period and the game was tied after the second period.
Jack Janzen had a pair of goals for the Hawks and other Nipawin goals came from Sean Shiels and Konnor Watson.
Brock Evans, Hunter Motley and Pryce Thiessen responded for the Klippers.
Colten Scott made 20 saves for the Hawks; Mattias Radke made 30 saves for Kindersley.
The Melville Millionaires were in Nipawin to face the Hawks on Tuesday, Jan. 20, results were not available.
The Mustangs won the second game of their southern road swing with a 3-2 win over the Weyburn Red Wings in Weyburn on Saturday, Jan. 17.
The game was tied 1-1 after the first period and the Mustangs led 2-1 after the second period.
Zayden Sadlemeyer, Jack McHarg and Tristin Ziola scored for Melfort.
Former Mustangs player Will Munro and Roan Burgess responded for the Red Wings.
Kason Kobelka made 28 saves for Melfort; former Swift Current Broncos’ goalie Joey Rocha made 24 saves for Weyburn.
Melfort opened their southern road swing with a 3-2 win over the Estevan Bruins in Estevan on Friday, Feb. 16.
The game was scoreless after the first period and tied 2-2 after the second period.
Kaleb Binner scored the winning goal for the Mustangs with under five minutes left in the game.
Other Melfort goals came from Austin Shepherd and Nolan Patterson.
Noah Asmundson and Daniel Tverdosvky responded for Estevan.

La Ronge closed their week with an 8-2 loss to the Yorkton Terriers in Air Ronge on Sunday, Jan. 18.
The Terriers led 4-0 after the first period and 6-2 after the second period.
William Knox and Brock Inglis scored for the Ice Wolves in the second period.
Gabriel Courchesne had a hat trick for the Terriers. Other Yorkton goals came from Cash Lanigan, Tyler Palin, Gavin Bartha, Jye Zawatsky and Thomas Ries.
Graham Brown made 23 saves in just over 29 minutes for the Ice Wolves before he was replaced by Riley Zezel who made 16 saves.
The Ice Wolves earned a split in their two-game set in Air Ronge with the Klippers with a 4-3 win on Saturday, Jan. 17.
Kindersley led 1-0 after the first period and 3-1 after the second period.
Dayton Tailfeathers, Jacob Morrison and Inglis scored in the third period for La Ronge to complete the comeback. Former Klipper Jordan LaFleur added the other Ice Wolves goal.
