Mustangs see winning streak snapped by North Stars

The Melfort Mustangs had their winning streak snapped last week and the La Ronge Ice Wolves got some extra time off when their scheduled game for the week was postponed. 

Melfort had their 17 game winning streak snapped by the Battlefords North Stars in North Battleford on Tuesday, Jan. 7. 

The game was tied 1-1 after the first period and second period. 

Zac Somers scored the lone Mustangs’ goal. 

Seth Dragan had a pair of goals for the North Stars while Braden Nienaber added the other Battlefords goal. 

Kristian Coombs made 18 saves for Melfort; Justen Maric made 41 saves for the North Stars. 

As of Jan. 13 the Mustangs are in first place in the Sherwood Division and SJHL with a record of 29-5-0-0 with 58 pints, 11 points ahead of the Flin Flon Bombers in both the leaguer and the Sherwood, the Ice Wolves are in third place with a record of 15-18-10 with 31 points and the Hawks are in fourth place with a record of 7-24-3-2 with 19 points. 

The Mustangs got back on the winning track with a 5-1 win over the Yorkton Terriers in Melfort on Saturday, Jan. 11. 

Melfort led 1-0 after the first period and 4-0 after the second period. 

Logan Keup had a pair of goals for the Mustangs, Reilley Kotai, Brayden Westerlund and Ashton Hutchinson added the other Melfort goals. 

Jeff Hammond scored the lone Terriers goal. 

Coombs made 28 saves for Melfort; Callum Craig made 26 saves for the Terriers in just over 48 minutes before he was replaced by Ethan Farrow who stopped all three shots he faced. 

The Kindersley Klippers were in Melfort to play the Mustangs on Wednesday, Jan. 15, results were not available. 

Melfort’s scheduled game against the Ice Wolves at the Northern Lights Palace on Friday, Jan. 10 was postponed due to bus issues. A makeup date has not been announced by the league. 

The Ice Wolves were in Weyburn to face the Red Wings on Tuesday; Jan. 14 and Estevan to play the Bruins on Wednesday, Jan. 15, results were not available for either game. 

The Hawks concluded their two-game set in Kindersley with a 7-1 loss to the Klippers on Sunday, Jan. 12. 

The Klippers led 1-0 after the first period and 3-1 after the second period. 

Finley Radloff scored the Hawks’ lone goal. 

Rylan Wieler, Mason Bueckert, Zakery Anderson, Avery Johnson, Brock Evans, Jacob Dennis and Dawson Karol scored for the Klippers. 

Nik Trakakis made 35 saves for the Hawks in his debut; Cody Jaman made 16 saves for Kindersley. 

The Hawks began their two-game set in Kindersley with a 2-0 shutout loss to the Klippers on Saturday, Jan. 11. 

Cody Jaman stopped all eight shots he faced to record the shutout for Kindersley. 

Avery Johnson and Cobe Perlinger scored for the Klippers. 

Gage Roberts made 38 saves for the Hawks. 

Nipawin opened their week with a 9-2 loss to the Bombers in Flin Flon on Wednesday, Jan. 8. 

The Bombers led 2-1 after the first period and 71- after the second period. 

Konnor Watson and Will Whitter scord for the Hawks. 
Wyatt Stinson had a hat trick for the Bomber, while Landon Alexander and Anthony Piccininno each added a pair of goals; Koen Seft and Leighton Carruthers scored the other Bombers’ goals. 

Nathan Claydon made 20 saves in just over 28  minutes for the Hawks before he was replaced by Gage Roberts who made 30 saves. 

Kenneth Marquart made 12 saves for Flin Flon. 

The Ice Wolves continue their southern road swing this weekend when they play the Bruins in Estevan on Friday, Jan. 17 and the Red Wings in Weyburn on Saturday, Jan. 18. 

The Mustangs are in Yorkton to play the Terriers on Friday, Jan. 17 and Nipawin does not have a game on the schedule this week. 

Hawks most active area team at Jan. 10 trade deadline

The Nipawin Hawks were the most active team at the Jan. 10 SJHL and CJHL trade deadline trading a veteran defenseman and picking up another goalie. 

The Hawks traded 20-year-old defenseman Henry Smith to the Niverville Nighthawks of the MJHL for a Player Development Fee (PDF). Smith, who is from Richmond, British Columbia, was an assistant captain and had four points and  73 penalty minutes in 24 games for Nipawin in 2024-2025. 

The Hawk next acquired 20-year-old goalie Nikolas Trakakis from the Virden Oil Capitals of the MJHL. Trakakis, who is from St-Laurent, Quebec had a record of 8-11-0, with a 3.52 GAA and .879 save percentage in 21 games for Virden. Trakakis played for the Smoth Falls Bears and Navan Grads of the CCHL in 2023-2024. 

La Ronge was involved in one of the larger trades of the deadline sending 2004-born forward Mason Buekert to the the Kindersley Klippers. The Klippers returned forwards Dayton Tailfeathers and Alex Mack and a PDF. Kindersley also sent La Ronge their 2025 2010-born first round pick along with 2025 2009-born second round pick. La Ronge sends Kindersley their 2025 2009-born third round pick.                                 

Bueckert, who is from Saskatoon, has 43 goals and 111 points in 122 career SJHL games, all with the ice Wolves. In 2024-2025, he has 31 points in 34 games 

The Melfort Mustangs lone trade of the day was to acquire  the Notre Dame Hounds  second round pick in the 2025 (2009-born) draft for a PDF.
