Mustangs on winning streak in SJHL’s UPL Division

The Melfort Mustangs extended a winning streak, the Nipawin Hawks saw a winning streak end and a down season for the La Ronge Ice Wolves continued this week. 

As of Feb. 16 the Hawks are in second place in the UPL Division with a record of 29-16-1-1 with 60 points, 10 points behind the Flin Flon Bombers who became the first team to clinch an SJHL playoff spot this week. The Melfort Mustangs are third with a record of 21-20-2-2 with 46 points, and are above .500 for the first time since November, 2025. The Ice Wolves are in fourth place with a record of  8-32-3-1 with 20 points. 

The Hawks lost their second straight on their southern road swing with a 5-2 loss to the Estevan Bruins in Estevan on Sunday, Feb. 15. 

The Bruins led 3-0 after the first period and 3-2 after the second period. 

Braeden Jockims and Finley Radloff scored for the Hawks. 

Ewan Rennie had a hat trick and Drew Beasley added a pair of goals for Estevan. 

Colten Scott made 29 saves for Nipawin; Nathan Kam made 36 saves for the Bruins. 

Nipawin saw their winning streak come to an end with a 3-2 loss to the Weyburn Red Wings in Weyburn on Saturday, Feb. 14. 

The game was tied 1-1 after the first period and the Red Wings led 3-1 after the second period. 

Braedan Jockims and Mason Karokachuk scored for the Hawks. 

Dion Schraeder had a pair of goals for Weyburn with Josh Sale adding the other Red Wings goal. 

Gage Roberts made 32 saves for the Hawks; Nate Stevens made 36 saves for the Red Wings. 

The Hawks ran their own winning streak to four straight with a 6-1 win over the Battlefords North Stars in Nipawin on Tuesday, Feb. 10. 

Nipawin led 1-0 after the first period and 4-1 after the second period. 

Braeden Joakims and Mason Karokachuk each had a pair of goals for the Hawks. Other Nipawin goals came from Brady Seabrook and Finley Radloff. 

Drew Williamson scored the lone goal for the North Stars. 

Gage Roberts made 28 saves for Nipawin; Kaeden Serpa made 33 saves for the North Stars. 

The Mustangs ran their winning streak to five straight with a 2-1 win over the Broncos on Saturday, Feb. 14 in Humboldt. 

Melfort led 2-0 after the first and second periods. 

Kelan Simmonds and Bo Eisner scored for the Mustangs. 

Morgan Hackman added the third period goal for Humboldt. 

Kason Kobelka made 28 saves for Melfort; Brady Holtvogt made 31 saves for Humboldt. 

Melfort won the first game of their home-and-home with the Broncos in dramatic fashion on Friday, Feb. 13 in Melfort to run the winning streak to four consecutive games. 

The Mustangs came back from one goal down late and won 3-2 in overtime. 

Dru Mushumanski was the hero twice for the Mustangs scoring the game tying goal with two seconds left in regulation. Mushumanski then scored the game winner 1:43 into the extra frame. 

The Mustangs led 1-0 after the first period and trailed 2-1 after the second period. 

Luke Mackenzie scored for the Mustangs in the first period. 

Brayden Skogstad and Logan Flint responded for the Broncos in the second period. 

Madden Mulawka made 24 saves for Melfort; Matthew Bradley made 38 saves for the Broncos. 

The Mustangs ran their winning streak to three straight with a 4-1 win over the Estevan Bruins in Melfort on Wednesday, Feb. 11. 

Melfort led 2-0 after the first period and 3-0 after the second period. 

Noel Englot, Nolan Patterson, Darren Hunt and Zayden Sadlemyer scored for the Mustangs. 

Rylan Williams responded for the Bruins. 

Kason Kobelka made 23 saves for the Mustangs; Dylan Adams made 22 saves for the Bruins. 

Melfort was in Warman to face the Wolverines on Monday, Feb. 15, results were not available for press time. 

The Ice Wolves dropped their second consecutive game to the Battlefords North Stars in their two-game homestand in Air Ronge  6-1 on Saturday, Feb. 14. 

The North Stars led 4-0 after the first period and 6-0 after the second period. 

Quinn Tavender scored the lone La Ronge goal in the third period. 

Owen Nelson had  a pair of goals for the North Stars; Kobe Sawyer, Anthony Campbell, Finly Klippenstein and Williamson added the other Battlefords goals. 

Graham Brown made 39 saves for the Ice Wolves; Spencer Michnik made 22 saves for the North Stars. 

La Ronge dropped the first game of their two game homestand 6-1 to the North Stars in Air Ronge on Friday, Feb. 13. 

The North led 1-0 after the first period and 3-0 after the second period. 

Grayden Perozni had the lone goal for the Ice Wolves in the third period. 

Carter Geysen, Cole Hines, Campbell, Nelson and Williamson scored for the North Stars. 

Brown made 30 saves for the Ice Wolves; Serpa made 23 saves for the 

North Stars. 

The Ice Wolves opened their week with a 6-5 loss to the Warman Wolverines in Air Ronge on Tuesday, Feb. 10. 

Warman led 3-2 after the first period and 6-4 after the second period. 

Perozni had a pair of goals for the Ice Wolves. Other La Ronge goals came from Evan Cook, Dayton Tailfeathers and Oliver Christiansen. 

Kayden Yeaman had a pair of goals for the Wolverines while other Warman goals came from Carter Bergen, Peyton Allard, Owen Parks and Nate Crashley. 

Riley Zezel made 17 saves in just over 27 minutes for the Ice Wolves before he was replaced by Brown who made 20 saves. Taye Timmerman made 29 saves for the Wolverines. 

The Ice Wolves were in Nipawin to play the Hawks on Tuesday, Feb. 16, results were not available for press time. 

The Ice Wolves and Mustangs face off in a home-and-home this weekend with the teams meeting in Melfort on Friday, Feb. 20 and in Air Ronge on Saturday, Feb. 21. 

The Estevan Bruins are in Nipawin to face the Hawks on Friday, Feb 20 and the Humboldt Broncos are in Nipawin on Saturday, Feb. 21.
