Mustangs end Bombers 23-game home winning streak

The Flin Flon Bombers were 23-0 at the Whitney Forum, that was until the Melfort Mustangs came into Flin Flon and beat the Bombers on Feb. 28. 

The Mustangs defeated the Bombers and ran their winning streak to 11 straight and continued their run to a possible playoff spot.

Zayden Sadlemyer scored the winning goal for Melfort 2:44 into the extra frame. 

The game was tied 2-2 after the first and second periods. 

Tristin Ziola scored both regulation time goals for Melfort in the first period. 

Joey Lies and Leo Seitz responded for the Bombers in the first period. 
Kason Kobelka made 32 saves for Melfort; Charlie Tritt made 18 saves for the Bombers. 

As of March 2 the Nipawin Hawks are in second place in the UPL Division with a record of 32-18-1-1 with 66 points, 11 points behind the league and division leading Bombers, the Mustangs are in third place with a record of 27-20-2-2 with 58 points and the La Ronge Ice Wolves are in fourth place with a record of 9-37-4-1 with 37 points. 

The Bombers and Hawks have each clinched playoff spots, the Mustangs are in sixth overall and would make the playoffs as the top eight teams make the playoffs. Melfort is currently four points ahead of the Estevan Bruins and five points ahead of the Melville Millionaires. 

Melfort has five games remaining in the regular season. 

Melfort ran their win streak to 10 straight with a 4-3 win over the first place Bombers in Melfort on Friday, Feb. 27. 

Melfort led 2-1 after the first period and the game was toed 2-2 after the second period. 

Kaleb Binner, Nolan Patterson, Dru Mushumanski and Carter Bilous scored for the Mustangs. 

Nathan Lalumiere, Wyatt Stinson and Landon Alexander responded for the Bombers. 

Madden Mulawka made 39 saves for Melfort; Finn Werner made 21 saves for Flin Flon. 

The Mustangs ran their winning streak to nine straight with a 4-2 win over the Weyburn Red Wings in Melfort on Tuesday, Feb. 24. 

Melfort led 2-1 after the first period and 4-1 after the second period. 

Nolan Patterson had a pair of goals for the Mustangs. Other Melfort goals came from Ziola and Luke Mackenzie. 

Will Munro and Josh Karman scored for the Red Wings. 

Kobelka made 25 saves for the Mustangs. Joey Rocha made 22 saves for Weyburn in two periods before he was replaced by Nate Stevens who stopped all five shots he faced. 

Melfort was in Air Ronge to face the Ice Wolves on Tuesday, March 3, results were not available for press time. 

Nipawin closed their week with a 7-2 loss to the Terriers in Yorkton on Friday, Feb. 27. 

Yorkton led 1-0 after the first period and 5-2 after the second period. 
Mason Karokachuk and Braeden Jockims scored for the Hawks. 

Cash Lanigan, Thomas Ries, Vinay Junek, Jye Zawatsky, Brett Buckley, Gabriel Courchesne and Gavin Bartha responded for the Terriers. 

Colten Scott made 34 saves for the Hawks; Callum Creig made 18 saves for Yorkton. 

The Hawks opened their week with a 4-2 loss to the Bombers in Flin Flon on Tuesday, Feb. 24. 

The Bombers led 3-0 after the first period and 3-1 after the second period. 

Jockims and Eric Hoiness scored for the Hawks. 

Pierce Yakimuhcuk, Connor Miller, Leo Seitz and Joey Lies responded for the Bombers. 

Gage Roberts made 33 saves for the Hawks; Tritt made 27 saves for Flin Flon. 

The Ice Wolves wrapped up their Yorkton and Melville road trip with an 11-1 loss to the Terriers in Yorkton on Saturday, Feb. 28. 

Yorkton led 5-0 after the first period  and 9-1 after the second period. 

Dayton Tailfeathers scored the lone goal for the Ice Wolves. 

Tylan Henrikson had a pair of goals for thee Terriers. Lanigan, Junek, Zawatsky, William Leonard, Austin Horbachewsky, Aidan Vallance, Owen Roberts and Ryder McDonald added the other Terriers goals. 

Graham Brown made 12 saves for the Ice Wolves in just over 16 minutes before he was replaced by Riley Zezel who made 35 saves. Alexandro Montoya made 10 saves for the Terriers. 

La Ronge continued their road trip with a 2-1 shootout win over  the Melville Millionaires in Melville on Friday, Feb. 27. 

Evan Cook and Grayden Perozni each scored for La Ronge in the three round shootout. 

The game was scoreless after the first period and tied 1-1 after the second period. 
Perozni scored the lone goal in regulation for La Ronge. 

Hudson Binder responded in regulation time for Melville. 

Brown made 38 saves for La Ronge; Matt Spencer-Dahl made 25 saves for the Millionaires. 

The Ice Wolves continued their road trip with a 4-3 overtime loss to the Yorkton Terriers in Yorkton on Wednesday, Feb. 25. 

Lanigan scored the winner for Yorkton 3:50 into overtime. 

Yorkton led 1-0 after the first period and the game was tied 1-1 after the second period. 

Tailfeathers had a pair of goals for La Ronge with Quinn Tavender adding the other Ice Wolves goal in regulation. 

Ries, Zawatsky, Horbachewsky and Zawatsky scored for Yorkton in regulation. 
Zezel made 36 saves for La Ronge;  Creig made 23 saves for Yorkton. 

The Ice Wolves opened their road trip with a 5-4 loss to the Millionaires in Melville on Tuesday, Feb. 24. 

The Millionaires led 2-1 after the first period and 5-2 after the second period. 

Brock Inglis, Jaxen Smyth, Justin Berezniuk and Perozni scored for the Ice Wolves. 

Kale Margolis had a pair of goals for Melville. Other Millionaires goals came from Preston Baerwald, Boston Harkness and Matthew Edwards. 

Brown made 31 saves for La Ronge; Spencer-Dahl made 21 saves for the Millionaires. 

The Humboldt Broncos were in Air Ronge to face the Ice Wolves on Thursday, March 5, results were not available for press time. 

The Broncos were in Air Ronge to face the Ice Wolves again on Friday, March 6. 

The Hawks and Mustangs meet in Melfort on Friday, March 6. 

The Yorkton Terriers are in Melfort to play the Mustangs on Sunday, March 8. The Warman Wolverines are in Nipawin to face the Hawks on Sunday, March 8.
