Mustangs become first team in SJHL to clinch playoff spot

The Melfort Mustangs became the first team in the SJHL to clinch a spot in the playoffs last week. 

Melfort clinched the spot after having a perfect week and running their current win streak to five straight. 

As of Feb. 17, the Mustangs are in first place in the Sherwood and the SJHL with a record of 38-7-0-0 with 76 points six points ahead of the Flin Flon Bombers in both the division and the SJHL. The La Ronge Ice Woves are in third place with a record of 18-23-2-2 with 40 points and the Nipawin Hawks are in  fourth place with a record of 10-30-3-3 with 26 points. 

The Bombers also clinched a playoff spot last week 

Melfort concluded their perfect week with a 3-2 win over the Ice Wolves in La Ronge on Saturday, Feb. 15. 

Melfort led 1-0 after the first period and second period. 

Will Munro, Zayden Sadlemeyer and Reilley Kotai scored for the Mustangs. 

Jacob Cossette and Alex Mack responded for the Ice Wolves in the third period. 

Madden Mulawka made 22 saves for Melfort; Graham Brown made 41 saves for La Ronge. 

The Mustangs opened their week with a 4-3 win over the Weyburn Red Wings in Melfort on Thursday, Feb. 13. 

The game was tied 2-2 after the first period and the Red Wings led 3-2 after the second period. 

Reilley Kotai, Logan Belton, Ashton Hutchinson and Danton Cox scored for Melfot. 
Ethan DeKay, Braigh Le Grandeur and Lucas Schmid responded for the Red Wings. 

Madden Mulawka made 18 saves for Melfort; Angelo Zol made 30 saves for Weyburn. 

The Mustangs were in North Battleford to play the North Stars on Tuesday, Feb. 18, results were not available. 

The Ice Wolves were in Yorkton to play the Terriers on Tuesday, Feb. 18 and in Wilcox to play the Notre Dame Hounds on Wednesday, Feb, 19, results were not available. 

The Hawks ended their week on a winning note with a 5-2 win over the Notre Dame Hounds in Nipawin on Sunday, Feb. 16. 

The Hounds led 1-0 after the first period and 2-0 after the second period. 

Carter Anderson had a pair of goals for the Hawks including an empty netter late in the game; Brady Seabrook, Ashton Tait and Mason Karokachuk scored the other Nipawin goals. 

Gage Roberts made 19 saves for Nipawin; Spencer Borsos made 37 saves for Notre Dame. 

The Weyburn Red Wings shut out the Hawks 1-0 in Nipawin on Friday, Feb. 14. 

Angelo Zol stopped all 21 shots he faced to record the Weyburn shutout. 

The Red Wings led 1-0 after the first and second periods. 

Josh Karman scored the lone Weyburn goal in the first period. 

Roberts made 21 saves for Nipawin. 

The Hawks opened their week with a 4-3 overtime win over the Ice Wolves in La Ronge on Tuesday, Feb. 11. 

Will Whitter scored the winner for Nipawin 4:19 into the overtime.The Ice Wolves led 2-1 after the first and second periods. 
Karakochuk scored a pair of goals for Nipawin in regulation with Eric Hoiness adding the other Hawks’ goal. 

Alex Mack, Cole Thomas and Hudson Cameron responded for Ice Wolves in regulation. 

Nik Trakakis made 32 saves for Nipawin; Graham Brown made 35 saves for La Ronge. 

The Ice Wolves were in Wilcox to play the Notre Dame Hounds on Wednesday, Feb, 19, results were not available. 

The Hawks are on a southern road swing this weekend. On Friday, Feb. 21 the Hawks are in Weyburn to play the Red Wings, on Saturday, Feb. 22 they are in Estevan to play the Bruins and on Sunday, Feb. 23 they are in Wilcox to play the Notre Dame Hounds. 

The Ice Wolves are in Melville to play the Millionaires on Friday, Feb. 21and in Yorkton to play the Terriers on Saturday, Feb. 22. 

The Mustangs have a home-and-home with the Humboldt Broncos this weekend. The teams meet in Melfort on Friday, Feb 21 and in Humboldt on Saturday, Feb. 22.
