A man convicted of sexually assaulting his preteen step-daughter repeatedly for more than a year will serve a four-year sentence.
The 36-year-old man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim, came to Prince Albert’s provincial court accompanied by the girl’s biological mother. She said she didn’t believe her now 16-year-old daughter, who testified at trial – and still thinks her partner is innocent.
“I was there,” she told the Daily Herald during the sentencing hearing Thursday. “It’s not possible.”
The man’s lawyer, Peter A. Abrametz, acknowledged that his client was convicted of a “horrific” act. But he argued that the victim didn’t “present” herself in a way consistent with her victim impact statement.
Judge S.D. Loewen took issue with that claim.
“In all the years I have been doing this job, I have never seen two victims react the same,” he said.
