MLCN celebrates Treaty 6 Adhesion

Residents celebrated the signing of the Adhesion to Treaty 6 in Montreal Lake Cree Nation on Tuesday, Feb. 10.

“It was an incredible day of reconnecting with friends, and family in Montreal Lake,” Chief Tammy Cook-Searson wrote.

The Adhesion to Treaty 6 was signed on the north end shores of Montreal Lake on Feb. 11, 1819, 137 years ago.

Chief Peter Beatty of Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation (PBCN) and Chief Tammy Cook-Searson of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band joined with Chief Joyce McLeod,  and the community of Montreal Lake Cree Nation (MLCN), who hosted the celebrations.

Premier Scott Moe, Official Opposition Leader Carla Beck, Treaty Commissioner Dr. Cathy Walker, ministers, MLAs, Elders, students and community members attended the event, reported by Chief Tammy Cook-Searson, on Facebook.

Cook-Searson commended the fishermen, cooks, who “prepared a special traditional meal – a fish fry fried moose meat, bannock and all the trimmings,” she wrote.

The three first nations make up the Woodland Cree.
