MLA Report: Prince Albert Northcote

Alana Ross, MLA for Prince Albert Northcote

Saskatchewan Deputy Premier and Finance Minister, Jim Reiter, recently tabled the 2026-27 provincial budget: Protecting Saskatchewan. This budget focuses on the priorities that matter most to residents and outlines our government’s financial plan for the fiscal year beginning April 2026 and ending March 2027. The people of this great province are at the core of every decision in this budget. We are always listening, and the top concerns we’ve heard are health care and affordability. Your Saskatchewan Party government will deliver on both.

This year’s budget includes investments to improve health care access and outcomes for patients, families and providers. Through the Patients First Health Care Plan, we are working to ensure people receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time. This includes increasing the number of health care professionals and expanding options for patients. We are building on progress already underway, with a goal of ensuring every resident has access to a primary care provider by 2028. The plan includes more than 50 initiatives to strengthen services across the province. To learn more, visit www.saskatchewan.ca/patientsfirst.

Investments in health infrastructure are also a key part of this budget. Construction of the Prince Albert Victoria Hospital continues to advance. The new multi-level acute care tower will include a heliport, an expanded emergency department, larger operating rooms, and a dedicated maternity unit with a neonatal intensive care unit. It will also feature advanced imaging services, including an MRI, as well as a First Nations and Métis cultural space. These upgrades will provide the growing population of Prince Albert and northern Saskatchewan with improved and expanded care for many years to come.

While we continue building on our commitments to improve health care at home, we are also protecting Saskatchewan with more than $2.5 billion in annual affordability measures. Building on the Saskatchewan Affordability Act, this includes the second year of a four-year plan to reduce provincial income taxes. Key personal income tax exemptions including the basic, spousal, equivalent-to-spouse and child exemptions, as well as the seniors’ supplement will increase by $500 again this year. The Saskatchewan Low-Income Tax Credit will also increase by an additional five per cent, on top of indexation, helping provide meaningful relief for residents.

Our government recognizes the ongoing pressures of rising costs and remains committed to helping families manage everyday expenses. As Minister of Parks, Culture and Sport, I am also pleased to highlight $4 million in new funding in this year’s budget to double the Active Families Benefit. With spring approaching, it’s a great time to get active and enjoy the outdoors again. This support will help families cover the cost of their kids’ participation in sports, arts and cultural activities.

Work continues for our government in keeping our province moving forward for the people of Saskatchewan. I look forward to continuing to represent the people of Prince Albert Northcote and to keeping you informed about the work being done on your behalf.
