Mintos suffer first loss of the season

An eight-game run of success to start the 2019-20 Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League campaign came to an end for the Prince Albert Mintos Thursday as they suffered a 4-1 loss to the Beardy’s Blackhawks at the Willow Cree Memorial Sports Centre.

Despite firing 43 shots on net, the Mintos were only able to solve goaltender Matthew Heannessey once as Chase Bertholet scored midway through the final frame.

Special teams played a big part in Thursday’s encounter as the Blackhawks potted a pair of shorthanded goals in the second period.

Aaron Lorenz scored twice for the hosts, who improved their record to 3-4.

Holden Doell had a goal and an assist in the triumph, while Cole Duperreault dished out a pair of helpers.

Robert Pizzey also lit the lamp for the Blackhawks.

Joel Favreau made 29 saves for the Mintos, who remain in first place in the league with an 8-1 record.

The Mintos will return to the Art Hauser Centre Saturday for a 7 p.m. matchup with the 3-3 Moose Jaw Warriors.
