Mayoral elections: incumbents knocked off in Regina and Moose Jaw

Saskatoon and Prince Albert voters weren’t the only ones electing new civic leadership on Monday. Here is a wrap of results from some of the other notable communities around the province …

REGINA

Chad Bachynski has been elected Regina’s next mayor, knocking off incumbent Sandra Masters,

Bachynski, a resident of the city for more than 25 years, finished comfortably ahead of former councillor Lori Bresciani.

“This is a role I do not take lightly and I want to express my deep appreciation to everyone who believed in our vision and our message,” he said.

Masters, seeking a second term as mayor, finished third. In 2020, she became the first fully-elected female mayor in Regina’s history.

Bachynski led the way with 15,728 votes, or 31.49 per cent of the vote. That put him 3,303 ahead of Bresciani (12,425 votes for 24.88 per cent) and 4,202 ahead of Masters (11,526 for 23.08 per cent). Bill Pratt finished fourth with 6,033 votes for 12.08 per cent. The other seven candidates were below three per cent of the vote.

MOOSE JAW

The race in Moose Jaw wasn’t even close.

James Murdock more than doubled his opposition’s combined vote total, finishing with 5,437 votes. That was well ahead of the 1,439 votes for Crystal Froese and the 601 votes for one-term incumbent Clive Tolley.

WARMAN AND MARTENSVILLE

In two Saskatoon bedroom communities, there was little drama when it came to the next mayor.

Incumbent Kent Muench easily won reelection in Martensville, receiving 966 votes to top Travis Sorenson’s 181 votes.

In Warman, Gary Philipchuk was acclaimed as mayor.

HUMBOLDT

Rob Muench will continue serving in the community of Humboldt, this term returning as mayor.

Muench, who was mayor from 2016 to 2020 and served as a councillor from 2006 to 2016 and 2020 to 2024, was elected again as mayor on Wednesday. He received 988 votes to topple Andrew Breker, who was second with 777 votes, and Harley Bentley, who received 182 votes. Incumbent Michael Behiel did not seek reelection.

SWIFT CURRENT

Incumbent Al Bridal will be returning as mayor for a second term, winning by acclamation.

NORTH BATTLEFORD

After 10 years as a city councillor, Kelli Hawtin is the new mayor of North Battleford. She defeated Wayne (Semaganis) Baptiste and Terence (Terry) Caldwell in the race to replace David Gillan, who did not seek reelection.

ESTEVAN

Replacing long-time mayor Roy Ludwig, who did not seek reelection after 30 years as either mayor or councillor, Anthony Sernick received 1,254 votes to knock off Rebecca Foord (1,108) and Zacch Vandenhurk (517).

WEYBURN

After serving on city council in Weyburn, Jeff Richards is moving up with an overwhelming mayoral victory. Richards received 1,755 votes, more than doubling the combined total of two-term incumbent mayor Marcel Roy (855) and Bruce Croft (21).

YORKTON

In the contest for mayor in Yorkton, Aaron Kienle earned almost two-thirds of the vote to defeat incumbent Mitch Hippsley. Kienle received 2,438 votes, well ahead of the 1,476 for Hippsley, who had served as mayor since 2020.

LA RONGE

Incumbent Joe Hordyski was acclaimed and will serve another term as mayor in the northern community.
