The driver of a vehicle who was thought dead in an incident on the Frobisher Lake ice road is recovering in hospital following a 30-minute search by RCMP and local guides.

RCMP were called to the scene at 7:25 p.m. on Jan. 18 after reports of a “sudden death in a vehicle on an ice road” near the community of Turnor Lake. However, when police and local guides finally located the vehicle at 8:07 p.m. they found the driver alive, but in medical distress.

According to reports from Turnor Lake RCMP, the vehicle’s tailpipe was blocked, causing it to fill with carbon dioxide. The driver complained of dizziness and confusion, and was unable to walk due to the cold weather and a foot injury.

Officers called for Emergency Medical Services, who met them at Birch Narrows medical clinic, where staff treated the driver to delay the onset of hypothermia. The driver was later taken to the hospital in La Loche.

RCMP Const. Kimberly Lam, Const. Karlee Keewatin-Smith and Const. Colin Marco were involved in the search, which covered more than 13 km across the lake, as well as woods nearby.
