Longtime Roman Catholic Diocese of Prince Albert Bishop Albert Thevenot has passed away at the age of 79.
The Diocese announced on Monday that Thevenot passed away peacefully at his residence in Prince Albert the morning of April 13.
“We are grateful to God for his many years of ministry and holy witness to Christ who ‘came that they may have life,’” current Prince Albert Roman Catholic Bishop Stephen Hero wrote in a letter posted to the Diocese’s Facebook page.
“Please keep Bishop Albert, his family, brother bishops, confreres in the Missionaries of Africa, and each other in your prayers as we mourn his sudden loss.”
Funeral arrangements are pending, Hero wrote, but it’s expected to take place sometime after Easter.
Thevenot was born in Somerset, Man on Nov. 4, 1945. He was ordained in 1980 after serving with the Society of the Missionaires of Africa. He was appointed Bishop of Prince Albert on May 26, 2008, and served the diocese until March 25, 2021.
In a press release, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops remembered Thevenot as a man who “dedicated his life to missionary service, pastoral care, and evangelization.”
Before serving as Bishop, Thevenot taught at the Minor Seminary of Katoke in Tanzania from 1973-76. He served in several posts in Tanzania, with a few years spent in Canada promoting missionary vocations.
Thevenot was also a part of the Anglican and Catholic Bishops’ Dialogue in 2009.
