After discussions with family, Elders, community members, Chief Tammy Cook-Searson announced, in a Facebook post, she will seek re-election as Chief of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) in the upcoming March 30 election.
“Our Nation is at a pivotal moment. We have important work underway in housing, health, education, infrastructure, economic development and Treaty implementation … There is momentum … There is stability … and that progress must continue,” she said.
In December, Cook-Searson announced that she would not seek re-election. Cook-Searson said it was a difficult decision, but the time had come to focus more on being a wife and mother.
In her Facebook post, she wrote that although her decision to not seek re-election came “from a sincere desire to spend more time with my family,” she changed her mind after “meaningful conversations with Elders and community members.”
“I listened to my family. I prayed. I reflected deeply on where our Nation stands today. After that reflection, I have decided to put my name forward and seek re-election for my eighth term,” she wrote.
Since her decision to not seek re-election she’s been approached by “many Elders” encouraging her to continue the work started.
“I do not make this decision lightly,” she wrote on Facebook.
Cook-Searson has more than 20 years’ experience as Chief and eight years before that as Band Councillor.
“I have worked alongside former Chiefs, Council, staff and our membership to strengthen our Nation … Serving you has been one of the greatest honours of my life,” she wrote.
“Let’s work together, and let’s support each other. I am ready to keep moving our Nation forward.”
