Christine Longjohn will return as chief of Sturgeon Lake First Nation after being re-elected on March 31.
Longjohn was sworn in following a pipe ceremony at the Sturgeon Lake First Nation Ban Hall on April 2. Band Couns. Fred Felix, Solomon Sanderson, Mark Daniels, Anita Parenteau, and Bernard Moosehunter were also re-elected. Austin Naytowhow is the only first-term councillor.
Longjohn was first elected in 2023.
“I’m incredibly honoured to be chosen for a second term as chief,” Longjohn said in a press release. “This role means everything to me, and I take it on with humility, heart, and a deep love for our people. With the strength of our community behind us and the guidance of our Elders, I know we can continue building a strong and thriving Nation—together.”
Community members, family members, students, and guests gathered for the pipe ceremony. Elders and knowledge keepers led the event, which offered blessings and prayers for the incoming leadership.
Longjohn thanked those who put their names forward in the election, and said their willingness to serve demonstrates the strength of Sturgeon Lake’s community spirit.
Sturgeon Lake First Nation is a Treaty 6 Cree Nation located 30 km northwest of Prince Albert. It has more than 3,270 members.
