Local school boards celebrate students at board meetings

Michael Oleksyn/Daily Herald Delegates at the Rotary Model UN at Carlton Cafetorium voted on an amendment on Tuesday.

Local school boards celebrated student achievements in extracurricular and educational activities during their regular meetings on Monday, March 23.

At the Prince Albert Catholic School Division board meeting, trustees celebrated achievements in everything from wrestling to academics.

“(We) definitely want to highlight those students and the staff that are working so hard to reach these achievements,” director of education Lorel Trumier said.

“It was March Madness,” she added.

The trustees celebrated two students from Ecole St. Mary High School, Jadon Sosnowski and Danika Linfitt, receiving the prestigious Chancellor’s Scholarship at the University of Saskatchewan. The Scholarship is part of the Best and Brightest program and each scholarship is valued at $30,000 to $75,000 over four years. It is awarded annually to students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, leadership and community involvement.

Trustees also celebrated the Ecole St. Mary High School wrestling team and their achievements at provincials earning six medals, with the boys team placing second.

They also celebrated the 20 students from Ecole St. Mary High School who took part in the Rotary Model UN at Carlton on March 16 and March 17. Sosnowski was also celebrated a second time for athletics for his win of the SHSAA Open Doubles Curling Championship with partner Sara Pawlyshyn. This was the first curling provincial title in the history of Ecole St. Mary High School.

There were also celebrations of achievements during the Prince Albert Music Festival which wrapped up last weekend.

Trumier said it was great to celebrate achievements in both academics and extracurricular.

At the Saskatchewan Rivers meeting, there were similar celebrations of achievements. The board celebrated Carlton basketball sending both boys and girls teams to Hoopla from March 26 to March 28 in Moose Jaw. The Carlton boys entered the tournament ranked second in the province and finished with a silver medal.

French Immersion students also took part in the Saskatchewan Rivers Winter Carnival at Carlton earlier this month and the Tintamarre Festival on March 18.

“I think our school division has been doing a great job with that and through those two events, it just highlights the positive French immersion language culture that we have in our buildings,” acting director of education Cory Trann said.

The division, like the Catholic Division, also celebrated achievements by students and teachers at the Prince Albert Music Festival.

“A huge thank you to goes out to our teachers and band directors for the work they put in allowing our students to shine,” the division said in a press release.
