The winter break will soon be upon families and there will be young people looking for things to do during the week.

The Wakaw & District Recreation Board have added/extended public skating and shinny opportunities at the arena and the Scott Cres. Outdoor Rink and snow hill are always available for families to enjoy together. On February 20th, the Wakaw Dental Office is hosting its second annual Winter Fest in the former curling rink with a street hockey tournament and crafts. The cost associated with this is $2/person for hockey or $2/craft. Hockey requires four players per team and each team will have one 15-minute game. Participants must bring their own sticks and equipment. Doors will open at 11:00 am, and the hockey and crafts will start at 1:00 pm. A canteen will be open selling hamburgers, hotdogs, chips, and pop, and there will be free coffee, hot chocolate, and water available.

February is National Library Lovers Month and there is a wealth of excellent books that local librarian, Vera, could suggest for those who want to spend the break reading for pleasure. February 19 – 22 during library hours there will be a Used Book Sale. For a monetary donation of a personal choice, people can pick up some great books, DVDs and puzzles. All donations go towards library programming and supplies like toner and paper.

In Rosthern, the Recreation Board also has special activities in store. At the Jubilee Sports Centre on Wednesday and Thursday, February 19th and 20th, Crafting with Kelsey will run from 2 – 3:30 on both days and is a free drop-in activity. Then on Friday, February 21st at the Community Multi-Purpose Centre on 3rd Street, Kincade’s Custom Archery will be holding a ‘Give it a shot’ Archery workshop from 4:30 – 8:30 pm. There is a $5 entry fee for this activity and pre-registration is required. The workshop can only accommodate 15 people at one time and is one hour in length with four different timeslots available. Registration fees are payable at the Rosthern Town Office.

Lastly, on Sunday, February 23, the Wakaw & District Recreation Board will be hosting a community event at the Dr. Scott Crescent Outdoor Rink and Warm-up Chalet. The intention is to celebrate this community facility and the supporters who made it happen. They were going to do this last year, but without actually having winter they did not get to host it. Watch for more information from the Recreation Board.
