Letters: Canada needs someone who stands up to Trump

Dear Editor,

When I moved to Canada in 1978, I was proud to live in John Diefenbaker’s Prince Albert Sask. riding. A spell-binding orator, Dief the Chief, was a human rights champion, a defence lawyer who became a Progressive Conservative Prime Minister.

These days the best the Conservatives can offer is Pierre Poilievre, a career politician who talks in slogans.  Like Trump, he wants to drill baby drill, reduce taxes on the rich, and slash foreign aid. In 20 years, he voted against the environment 400 times.

Last year, he said Canada felt broken. This year’s slogan is “Canada First”.  Can we trust him to lead Canada through the most serious crisis in our history?

As a member of SCAN (Seniors for Climate Action Now) I want a trustworthy leader, someone who stands up to Trump and has the skills to grow an environmentally responsible economy and control inflation.  Poilievre is an embarrassment.
