The last couple of days were a bit of a whirlwind for Seth LeMoal at the Harry Jerome Track.
The Grade 10 student from St. Mary ran in the 200 metre and 1,500m junior division races as part of the city high school track and field meet Wednesday, and followed that up by competing in the 400m and 800m events Thurday.
“It was a pretty packed day Wednesday with the 200m prelims and then both finals taking place in a little over an hour,” LeMoal said. “I love track and field though, so I don’t mind putting myself through those tough challenges.”
LeMoal’s busy schedule paid off as he edged out Christian Hare of Kinistino for the 1,500m title and was second to teammate Damilare Fasusi in the 200m race.
He followed that up on Thursday with convincing victories in the 400m and 800m events.
“The 200m and 1,500m races are ones that I like to run in for fun,” LeMoal said.
“The 400m and 800m events are what I’ve been focusing on since September. I’ve had some great coaching all through the winter and a lot of that hard work came together here today.”
In his first year of high school track and field, LeMoal earned a gold medal in the midget 400m race and a silver medal in the 800m event at the provincial high school championships in Prince Albert.
While he hopes to have a chance to add some hardware from the junior division in a couple of weeks in Moose Jaw, LeMoal isn’t looking too far ahead.
“A lot can happen in a year,” LeMoal said. “You don’t want to think that you are going to win because you can’t take anyone for granted out here.
“All you can do is just put in the work and give it everything you can when you run. The results will be what they are at the end of the day.”
When the North Central district meet takes place at the Harry Jerome Track next week, it will be another busy two-day stretch for LeMoal as he once again plans to compete in four events.
“My goal is to go for the overall aggregate title and then we’ll see where things stand when it comes to the provincials in Moose Jaw,” LeMoal said.
“The biggest thing that I’m working on right now is my overall form. I’m not going to grow much more here, but it’s just about the little things in practice if you want to get yourself to a higher level.”
The North Central district meet will get underway at 4:30 p.m. next Wednesday, with the second and final day of competition getting started at 10 a.m. Thursday.
The SHSAA championship will take place at Gutheridge Field in Moose Jaw on June 7 and 8.
