Toronto Maple Leafs draft PA Raiders goaltender Ian Scott in the fourth round of 2017 NHL Entry Draft

On Saturday Prince Albert Raiders goalie Ian Scott was up in his room playing NHL17 on the Xbox. The highly rated draft-eligible prospect had been watching the 2017 NHL Entry Draft on television, but found the proceedings nerve-racking and decided occupy himself with some virtual hockey instead.

Then he got a call from his agent.

“Just as I picked up I heard my mom scream and so I came downstairs,” Scott said.

That scream came as a result of the Toronto Maple Leafs announcing the selection of Scott in the fourth round, 110th overall, of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft in Chicago. Two other undrafted Raiders, defenceman Brayden Pachal and forward Parker Kelly, were invited to Ottawa Senators development camp, which starts on Tuesday.

“It’s pretty exciting,” Scott said of joining a team with a promising youth presence.

“The Leafs have been around forever and seeing what they did last year is pretty cool and it’s just an exciting opportunity to be a part of that organization.”

Although Scott finished the year with a 12-31-3-0 record, a 3.69 goals against average and a save percentage of .895, Maple Leafs assistant general manager Mark Hunter said those numbers don’t accurately represent Scott’s ability.

“I’m very happy (about our draft). We got a goalie in the fourth that we liked, we got two defencemen the first two picks. In general, we filled some holes and now it’s time for our development department to take hold and get these young men better,” Hunter told reporters following the draft.”

“Scott is a goalie that played on not a great team so his stats aren’t as good as they should be, but his technique and his size and his quickness side-to-side is very good.”
