Mann Art Gallery is inviting Jason Baerg and Liz Settee to host Plein Air Drawing Workshop on July 29, at 6:30 p.m. to 8:30.p.m. on the Prince Albert Riverbank on the North Saskatchewan River.
“People are going to come and bring their drawing tools, and hear some teachings from Elder Liz about this place, Kistahpinanihk, the great meeting place, and the indigenous histories here, and the meaning of this place,” said Lindsay Sorell, Gallery Operations Manager for the Mann Art Gallery.
The workshop is open for anyone, from people who may never have practiced art before, to experienced artists, to participate in a land-based drawing workshop.
Participants will need to bring their own art materials, and are encouraged to bring oil pastels, but watercolour and mixed media are also acceptable. Participants will also need to bring their own seating, such as a lawn chair or blankets, however, drawing boards will be supplied.
“It’s important to recognize our role on this land as treaty people, and how our relationship to the land plays into what we make. How we care for this land, and how the land informs who we are and our relationships to each other,” Sorell said when asked about the importance of the workshop.
“It’s important also just to make it intergenerational and to be having our practices informed by indigenous elders from this place so that we get a better context for where we are and what we’re doing.”
Participants must register before July 28, either in person at the Mann Art Gallery or online through the website at mannartgallery.ca
Tickets for the event can be purchased for $75.00, with a discounted rate of $65.00 for members of the Mann Art Gallery.
“We are a non-profit gallery, so members can take part in supporting what we do here. In turn, they get a special rate on workshops and community events like that. It’ s a great way to participate in the community,” explained Sorell.
An individual membership is $25.00 for an entire year at the Mann Art Gallery. The gallery also has free art events each month, and anyone can be notified about these events by signing up for the Mann Art Gallery newsletter.
The meet location will be accessible for anyone who may need accommodation, and will be provided via email for participants who purchased tickets. Participants may also sign in at the event upon arrival via list of participant names.
