Kinistino in running for Kraft Hockeyville

After serving as the host for Hockey Day in Saskatchewan in 2024, the town of Kinistino is hoping to become Kraft Hockeyville in 2025.

Randy Hanson, the president for Kinistino Minor Hockey, says the arena is in need of some major repairs.

“The rink is a focal point of our small town, especially in the winter months. It’s in dire need of some repairs and maintenance. The cost of it has been rising over the years. We thought we’d join this Kraft Hockeyville and see if we can be successful and maybe raise some funds for this community.”

All the funding raised from Hockey Day in Saskatchewan last year and any potential funds from Kraft Hockeyville would go towards replacing the ice plant, which was first installed during the 1970s.

The Kraft Hockeyville competition begins with a nomination and rally phase before moving onto the judging and top 4 announcement stage before voting opens in April.

Hanson says the best thing community members can do to support Kinistino’s cause is to spread awareness and to share stories of the rink online.

“If you want to support Kinistino, you can go onto Kraft Hockeyville on any social media or website, register and write a story of being in Kinistino or spending time in the rink. Videos, pictures of any note and we will gain points to move on in the competition.”

According to Hanson, Kinistino Minor Hockey currently has around 60 participants from U7 all the way through U13.

The winning community from Kraft Hockeyville receives $250,000 towards arena upgrades and the opportunity to host an NHL preseason game. The three runners up with receive $25,000 in arena upgrades.
