The Kikinahk Friendship Centre offered food for the picking up twice in January.
They received 44,000 lbs of frozen French Fries, which were in the yard behind the centre for people to pick up at their leisure.
On Thursday, Jan. 30, Thankful Thursday, the gym at the Centre was filled with food for people to pick up. The food available included green peppers, and Roma tomatoes.
Kikinahk staff organized the food with Second Harvest, a non-profit organization, Danielle DeBruyne, Kikinahk executive director, said.
“Second Harvest is Canada’s largest food rescue charity,” and it operates in all Canadian provinces,” according to its website.
Second Harvest partners with Canadian Fruit and Produce. Second Harvest contacted Canadian Fruit and Produce to send a shipment to Kikinahk.
“[The food] consisted of items that are high in Vitamin C … we’ve been working on this for a while because of the Scurvy cases in La Ronge,” DeBruyne said, adding, “they wanted to help us, Northern Saskatchewan.”
They received 12 palates of food, which includes green peppers, Roma tomatoes, cantaloupe, honeydew, potatoes, and oranges.
