Prince Albert boxer Aurora Isbister left Regina with a big win and some new hardware.

Isbister was named Tope Female Fighter of the competition after stopping her opponent in the second round at Summer Slam in Regina. The event was hosted by the Jaguar Boxing Club on Saturday, June 14.

“I was so happy, seeing how far I came from whenever I first started,” Isbister said when asked about her win. “All I wanted was to make my coach and my family and the people who supported me proud. I was just very excited and just couldn’t wait for the next fight.”

Isbister faced Nika Shvets of the Lonsdale Boxing Club out of Regina in the 60 kg women’s division. The fight was one of six on the card, which featured boxers from five clubs, including Red Wolf.

Isbister said she struggled at first, but she improved as the match continued.

“In the first round I was very nervous and she kind of overwhelmed me a bit,” Isbister said. “I wasn’t doing that good, but then during the second round I realized what I needed to do. I needed to just push through this fear and use it.”

This is Isbister’s third year boxing. Red Wolf coach Bradock Koch said she’s shown remarkable improvement during that time.

“She’s really worked hard,” Koch said. “She’s worked hard with Cole (Ahenakew), our elite boxer. He’s trained with her a lot. She was a little timid to start with, but she really came into her own this weekend. Just a dominating performance.”

Koch described Isbister’s win as a “break-out fight” for the young boxer.

“Everything came together for her,” he said. “She really put it together.”

With one Top Boxer award under her belt, Isbister has set her sights on new competitions. Over the next year, she hopes to fight at events outside of Saskatchewan, and someday reach nationals.

“I really like the discipline that it gives me,” she said. “Boxing just makes me happy because it makes me feel like I have accomplished something. It’s not like other sports I have tried. I just really like it and the people I meet and the new experiences.”

The Red Wolf Boxing Club has one final card on the horizon. They travel to Peguis First Nation in Manitoba in mid-July for the last event of the season.
