A man has died after an inmate taking part in a community training residence program allegedly robbed him in Red Wing, Sask., however police say the two incidents are not connected.

Prince Albert RCMP arrived at a residence in the community after an assault was reported at 8:43 p.m. The initial investigation determined that another man had pulled up outside the residence in a truck and assaulted the victim, then stealing his wallet and fleeing the scene.

The victim then got up and walked into the residence where he became unresponsive, according to a media release. He was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital and an autopsy was performed. Prince Albert RCMP released a statement saying the autopsy pointed to a “medical issue” as the cause of death, with “no indication that his death is related” to the assault.

The RCMP are still investigating, but a 21-year-old man has already been arrested in connection with the case.

Police have charged Sheldon Hilliard Goodvoice with one count of robbery with violence. Goodvoice was a provincial corrections inmate serving his sentence at a community training residence in Prince Albert. Under that program, all inmates are to be monitored and restricted by certain conditions. Goodvoice will make his first court appearance on Friday at 10 a.m.

He has been remanded into custody.

Neither the RCMP or the Ministry of Corrections and Policing were available to offer further comment by press time.

Red Wing is located just north of Prince Albert along Highway 2.
