It was an historic weekend for field lacrosse in Prince Albert.
The Prince Albert Attack hosted a two-day tournament at Max Clunie Field on Friday and Saturday, which featured the local U15 and U18 programs as they went up against teams from Sturgis and Yorkton.
“This is something that we’ve been thinking doing for a couple of years now with the Prince Albert Minor Lacrosse Association,” Attack coach Javan Bexson said. “To have everything come together like this is really special, especially for the athletes.
“There’s a lot of work that went to making sure the our box lacrosse schedule and field lacrosse schedule came together locally and we had a lot of help from the Saskatchewan Lacrosse Association to make sure that the event could happen.”
In addition to showcasing their talents in front of their friends and family in Prince Albert, the Attack teams also got a chance to face squads they can go up against at the provincials this weekend in Sturgis.
“It was a really good weekend from that aspect,” Bexson said. “The Under-15 team had some excellent performances and it was a good building weekend for our Under-18 team.
“There are a lot of new guys in the lineup there so we are still gelling quite a bit as it’s a younger team for the U18 level. They have a number of years to play together still and we’re excited to see what develops down the road with them.”
The Attack will be sending a U13, U15 and U18 team to the field lacrosse provincials, which runs from Friday to Sunday.
“We got some goals set out for that tournament already,” Bexson smiled.
When it comes to long-term plans for field lacrosse in Prince Albert, Bexson hopes to make this past weekend’s event an annual occurrence at Max Clunie Field.
“We’re shooting to make the “Under the Northern Lights” game that we had on Friday and Saturday a regular event,” Bexson said.
“We’d also like to host a provincials in the next two to three years here, so that’s something that we’re going to be building towards.”
Former Prince Albert Raiders forward Carson Miller was also in attended for the tournament as he suited up for the Yorkton Fighting Pikes.
Miller, who was dealt to the Victoria Royals in a deal that brought Dante Hannoun to the eventual Western Hockey League champions, scored the winning goal in Friday’s 7-5 affair against the Attack U18 team.
